Don’t disrupt yourself

I recently heard a great episode if six pixels of separation with guest Bob Knorpp.
They ended up in a fairly heated debate about the idea of disruption.

The tech industry as a whole seems fascinated with the idea of disruption. If the newest sexy startup isn’t ‘disrupting the industry’ it’s not actually all that sexy, but when you look at the big players (they mention Google specifically) they rarely disrupt their own industry.

Google has touched everything from mobile device operating systems to, green power, to online video distribution, and while most would declare that googles actual business is search the real money is in display advertising. In fact everything google does seems to track back in some way to increasing ad revenue. The android operating system ensures millions upon millions of people are able to see google ads literally anywhere. Self driving cars will give us years of time commuting to see more ads. YouTube is the largest video service and with pre, post, and mid roll ads, there are hours and hours of advertising being displayed every second.

Of all the industries that google has disrupted, display advertising is not one of them. Google established itself, and it’s place in the industry and since then has done everything to reaching into other sectors to bring more and more dollars it’s way.

What other sectors, areas, industries, or verticals could you be looking at to find a new area to disrupt to your benefit?
